Ngorongoro Crater

Take almost 30,000 large mammals and place them inside the crater of an extinct volcano. Add about 264 square kilometres (102 square miles) of wetlands, forests and grasslands, and the result is the Ngorongoro Crater. This world-famous safari destination offers its visitors superb game viewing in an unbelievably unique setting. Nothing can fully prepare you for the moment you first gaze down into the Ngorongoro Crater.
The Crater is located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a protected region in Tanzania that comprises a large chunk of the southern Serengeti’s short-grass plains and the Ngorongoro Highlands, a range of ancient volcanoes on the west side of the Great Rift Valley. The Ngorongoro Crater has earned a fabled reputation as one of Africa's most unique natural wonders, boasting a remarkable concentration of animals living in diverse habitats.
You will be picked up early in the morning from your hotel / Arusha and start to drive to Ngorongoro Crater. The drive will take you up the steep slopes of the East African Rift Valley to the Ngorongoro Crater. Afterwards, it continues on rough roads about 600 meters downwards into the crater. The crater has a diameter of 17-21 kilometres and is the home of a great animal kingdom. Nearly all the biodiversity of the East African savannah is gathered here. Only giraffes and a few other animal species for which the rock faces are too steep do not live in the crater. Depending on the season, 15,000 to 25,000 animals are gathered here; more than two-thirds are buffaloes, gnus, zebras, and gazelles. This large number of grazers also explains why the crater contains the largest density of predators in Africa. Besides other predators, more than 100 lions live here in several prides. The chances of watching the “Big Five” lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard within just a few hours are particularly good. After lunch, we will continue with the game drive. Then, after the game drive, we will drive up and out of the steep crater walls and then drive back to Arusha.
